Essam Al-Amir, Vice Chairman of the Supreme Council for Media Regulation, announced an official decision to block the game platform «Roblox» in Egypt, noting that coordination is underway with the National Telecommunications Regulatory Authority to implement the measure.
The announcement was made during a plenary session of the Egyptian Senate, which addressed motions concerning the risks of the internet and social media to children, with relevant authorities in attendance.
Earlier, Walaa Hermas Radwan, a member of the Senate, submitted a proposal to regulate Roblox, aiming to protect children’s moral and educational values, mitigate psychological and behavioral risks, and organize the operation of electronic gaming platforms more broadly.
The Senate’s Education, Scientific Research, Communications, and Information Technology Committee reviewed the proposal with representatives from the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology, as part of broader efforts to shield minors from inappropriate content. The explanatory memorandum and research annex detailed the platform’s nature and outlined key risks, including inappropriate content exposure, direct communication with strangers, and potential psychological and behavioral impacts on young users.
The memo also examined economic and behavioral implications of in-game purchases, referenced international legal disputes and warnings related to the platform, and surveyed global regulatory approaches ranging from oversight to restriction and bans. Authorities emphasized that the decision reflects a precautionary, child-safety–first approach that balances digital access with protection of minors.
