Saudi Clubs Claim 79% of Asia's Winter Transfer Spending

Saudi Arabia’s football clubs have made an extraordinary statement in the January 2026 transfer window, accounting for roughly 79% of all transfer spending across Asia. According to FIFA’s latest transfer report, Saudi clubs invested approximately $101 million (378.7 million SAR) in new players, ranking sixth globally in transfer expenditure.

Kingdom Dominates Asian Spending

The gap between Saudi Arabia and the rest of Asia is staggering. While 12 Asian countries collectively spent around $127.6 million on international transfers, Saudi clubs alone claimed the lion’s share. China came in a distant second with just $5.4 million, followed by the UAE at $5.3 million, Japan at $3.5 million, and Qatar at $2.5 million.

Here’s a mind-boggling stat: Saudi clubs outspent the combined total of all other Asian and African clubs in the January window. Asian clubs (excluding Saudi Arabia) spent $26.5 million, while African clubs spent $17.2 million — a combined $43.7 million, less than half of what Saudi clubs invested.

Record-Breaking Transfer Activity

The January 2026 window saw more than 5,900 international transfers in men’s professional football — a new record that represents a 3% increase from the same period last year. However, global spending on transfer fees dropped by about 18% compared to January 2025, totaling just over $1.9 billion. Still, this figure is roughly 20% higher than the numbers recorded in January 2023.

Global Rankings

England topped the global spending charts with $363 million, followed by Italy ($283 million), Brazil ($180 million), Germany ($126 million), and France ($120 million). Saudi Arabia’s sixth-place finish puts the Kingdom ahead of many traditional football powerhouses.

Vision 2030 in Action

This massive investment reflects Saudi Arabia’s ambitious plans to establish itself as a major force in both Asian and global football. The spending aligns with the Kingdom’s Vision 2030 initiative, which aims to transform Saudi Arabia into a world-class sports destination. With clubs continuing to attract international talent and invest in infrastructure, the Saudi Pro League is quickly becoming one of the most exciting leagues to watch.
