One goal was enough. Kai Havertz scored in the 16th minute and Arsenal won 1-0 at Liverpool on Sunday, 1 November, going top of the Premier League and ending a long wait: their last league win at Anfield came in 2012.

The chance began with a mistake. Liverpool.com's live report traced it to a poor pass from goalkeeper Alisson Becker, and Arsenal worked the ball down the right, where Noni Madueke found Declan Rice. His low ball reached the far post and Havertz turned it in with his left foot.

Liverpool responded, and Florian Wirtz struck the bar before half-time. What followed was a long afternoon without reward. ESPN's figures show Liverpool with 17 shots and 56% of possession, yet not one of those shots was on target. Arsenal had 10, three of them on target. The game produced seven yellow cards.

It was a sharp turnaround for Mikel Arteta's side, who had gone out of the League Cup in midweek to League Two's Fleetwood Town. Andoni Iraola's Liverpool had arrived five games unbeaten in all competitions, and they beat Arsenal 1-0 at Anfield last season before a goalless draw in London. Bukayo Saka was not in the starting line-up, with Christos Tzolis and Madueke in the wide roles, but the champions coped without him.

The table now has Arsenal on 24 points from nine games, three ahead of Manchester City, who lost to Brighton on Saturday. Brighton are third on 19, Chelsea fourth on 16 and Liverpool fifth on 15, nine points off the top.
