He started the business in 1991 and has led it ever since, through the shift from shareware to 3D engines, console hits and online games.

His decisions matter well beyond one studio. Unreal Engine is used by game makers, film crews and car designers, and Epic’s long dispute with app store owners over fees and payment rules has shaped how mobile games reach players. In 2026 he is steering the company through cost cuts and the move to a new engine generation.

Education

Sweeney studied mechanical engineering at the University of Maryland. According to the Academy of Interactive Arts and Sciences, his small software business took more and more of his time during his studies, and he chose to put his full effort into it.

In a 2009 interview quoted by CNBC, he said he did “not quite” finish the engineering degree. Programming, rather than designing machines, had become his main interest.

Career

Sweeney first sold software under the name Potomac Computer Systems. In 1991 he released his first shareware game, ZZT, a title that let players build their own levels and stories with a built-in scripting tool. Buyers mailed in orders and received the game on a disk.

Sales were steady enough to turn a side project into a company. The business was renamed Epic MegaGames and, through the 1990s, published PC titles such as Jazz Jackrabbit, Epic Pinball and Tyrian, working with outside authors as well as its own team.

The turning point came in 1998 with Unreal, a first-person shooter. The game itself was a moderate seller, but the technology under it, Unreal Engine, was licensed to other studios and became the core of Epic’s business. The company later moved to Cary, North Carolina, which remains its headquarters.

In the 2000s Epic built console games, including the Gears of War series. Microsoft later bought the Gears of War property, and Epic’s own site now directs players of that series to Xbox support.

Fortnite arrived in 2017 on PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Mac. Its free Battle Royale mode, where up to 100 players compete to be the last one standing, drew more than 78 million players in August 2018, and more than 3.4 million people played at the same time at one point in February that year, CNBC reported.

Epic also runs its own shop for PC games, the Epic Games Store. It now offers more than 6,000 games, and since June 2025 developers keep all of their first 1 million dollars in yearly net revenue per product before the standard 88/12 split applies.

Outside investors joined as the company grew. In April 2022 Sony Group and KIRKBI, the holding company behind The LEGO Group, put in 1 billion dollars each, at a post-money value of 31.5 billion dollars. Epic said at the time that it had only one class of common stock and remained controlled by Sweeney.

In February 2024 The Walt Disney Company announced a 1.5 billion dollar equity investment in Epic, together with a long-term project to build a games and entertainment universe connected to Fortnite.

The years since have been harder. In a note to staff published on 24 March 2026, Sweeney announced more than 1,000 layoffs, saying a drop in Fortnite engagement that began in 2025 meant the company was spending far more than it earned. He listed over 500 million dollars in other savings and said the cuts were not related to AI.

In May 2026 Fortnite returned to Apple’s App Store worldwide, six years after it was removed in 2020 when Epic added its own payment option. Our earlier report covered the day Fortnite went offline on iOS worldwide.

Current Roles

Founder and Chief Executive Officer, Epic Games (since 1991)

Controlling shareholder of Epic Games, according to the company

Leader of Epic’s technology direction, including the move from Unreal Engine 5 to Unreal Engine 6

Key Achievements

Unreal Engine

The engine Sweeney started for the 1998 game Unreal grew into one of the most widely used tools in the industry. Epic says it powers many leading games and is also used in film and television, broadcast, architecture, cars and simulation.

Used across Disney’s portfolio, including more than 15 Disney Parks attractions (Disney, 2024)

Unreal Engine 6 announced at Unreal Fest Chicago on 17 June 2026

Fortnite

Fortnite became Epic’s main product and a social platform with first-party modes such as LEGO Fortnite, Rocket Racing and Fortnite Festival, plus games made by creators. A Marvel live event inside the game drew more than 15.3 million players at once, according to Disney.

The Epic Games Store

The store gave PC developers a second large outlet with a lower fee. In 2025 players spent 1.16 billion dollars on it, up 6 percent, and it reached a record 78 million monthly active users on PC in December 2025.

More than 6,000 games in the catalogue (2026)

662 million free titles claimed by players in 2025

Spending on third-party PC games up 57 percent to 400 million dollars in 2025

Large outside partners

Under Sweeney, Epic drew money from some of the largest names in entertainment while he kept control. Sony and KIRKBI invested 2 billion dollars in 2022, and Disney committed 1.5 billion dollars in 2024.

<img fetchpriority="high" decoding="async" width="1920" height="1080" data-attachment-id="61388" data-permalink="https://thesauditimes.net/en/tim-sweeney/tim-sweeney-epic-games-founder-who-built-fortnite-and-unreal-engine-2/" data-orig-file="https://thesauditimes.net/en/wp-content/uploads/2026/10/tim-sweeney-photo.png" data-orig-size="1920,1080" data-comments-opened="0" data-image-title="Tim Sweeney, Epic Games Founder Who Built Fortnite and Unreal Engine" data-image-description="" data-image-caption="<p>Epic Games headquarters at 620 Crossroads Blvd in Cary, North Carolina.
