Hock Tan is the president and chief executive officer of Broadcom<\/a>, the American company that designs semiconductors and sells infrastructure software. He has held the post, and a seat on the board, since March 2006, when the business still traded as Avago Technologies.<\/p>\n

He matters now because Broadcom has become one of the main suppliers of custom chips and networking parts for artificial intelligence. In its 2025 fiscal year the company reported revenue of $63.9 billion, up 24 percent, and its AI semiconductor revenue rose 74 percent in the final quarter alone.<\/p>\n

Education<\/h3>\n

Tan studied at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), where he earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees in mechanical engineering.<\/p>\n

He later completed an MBA at Harvard University.<\/p>\n

Career<\/h3>\n

Tan spent the early part of his career in finance and general management. From 1983 to 1988 he was managing director of Hume Industries in Malaysia, and from 1988 to 1992 he was managing director of Pacven Investment, a venture capital fund based in Singapore.<\/p>\n

Broadcom’s biography also lists senior management positions at PepsiCo and General Motors, without giving dates.<\/p>\n

In 1992 he joined Commodore International, the computer maker, as vice president of finance, and stayed until 1994.<\/p>\n

He then moved to Integrated Circuit Systems (ICS), a listed maker of timing chips. He was senior vice president and chief financial officer from 1995 to 1999 and chief operating officer from 1996 to 1999.<\/p>\n

In June 1999 he became president and chief executive of ICS. He ran the company until September 2005, when it was acquired by Integrated Device Technology (IDT). He then chaired the IDT board from September 2005 to January 2008.<\/p>\n

In March 2006 Tan became president and chief executive of Avago Technologies. Avago had been created on December 1, 2005, when the investment firms KKR and Silver Lake bought the former semiconductor products group of Agilent Technologies, a business with roots in Hewlett-Packard.<\/p>\n

The buyers had offered $2.66 billion for the group, which had net revenue of about $1.8 billion in 2005. Its products at the time ranged from wireless and optical parts to printer chips and optical mouse sensors.<\/p>\n

On February 1, 2016, Avago combined with Broadcom Corporation and the merged group took the Broadcom name, with Tan remaining in charge.<\/p>\n

Two years later the group changed its legal home. On April 4, 2018, Broadcom completed a move of its parent company from Singapore to the US state of Delaware, and its shares began trading as Broadcom Inc. the next day under the same AVGO ticker.<\/p>\n
