Lisa Su is the chair and chief executive officer of AMD<\/a>, the American chip designer behind the Ryzen, EPYC and Instinct processor families. She has run the company since October 2014 and has also chaired its board since February 2022.<\/p>\n

Her tenure matters now because AMD has become one of the main suppliers of processors for data centres and artificial intelligence. In February 2026 the company reported record annual revenue of $34.6 billion for 2025, up 34 percent on the year before.<\/p>\n

Education<\/h3>\n

Su studied electrical engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), where she earned a bachelor’s degree, a master’s degree and a doctorate, all in that field.<\/p>\n

Her academic work centred on semiconductor devices. AMD’s board biography notes that she has published more than 40 technical articles.<\/p>\n

Career<\/h3>\n

Su began her career at Texas Instruments, where she was a member of the technical staff in the company’s Semiconductor Process and Device Center from 1994 to 1995.<\/p>\n

She then moved to IBM and stayed for about 13 years. She held a series of engineering and business posts there, rising to vice president of the Semiconductor Research and Development Center, a role that covered the direction of IBM’s silicon technologies, its joint development alliances and its chip research operations.<\/p>\n

In 2007 she joined Freescale Semiconductor as chief technology officer, leading the company’s technology roadmap and its research and development work. She was later promoted to senior vice president and general manager of Freescale’s networking and multimedia business, with responsibility for strategy, marketing and engineering for embedded communications and applications processors.<\/p>\n

AMD hired her in January 2012 as senior vice president and general manager of its global business units. In that job she was in charge of end-to-end execution for the company’s products.<\/p>\n

In July 2014 she became chief operating officer, bringing AMD’s business units, sales, global operations and infrastructure teams into one organisation. Three months later, on October 8, 2014, the board named her president and chief executive officer and gave her a seat on the board. She succeeded Rory Read, who stepped down as part of a planned transition.<\/p>\n

The company she took over was in the middle of a repair job. AMD’s announcement at the time said it had returned to profitability on a non-GAAP basis and had cut operating expenses by about 30 percent since 2012.<\/p>\n

The board added the title of chair in February 2022, the same month AMD closed its largest acquisition to date.<\/p>\n
