Its stated mission is &#8220;to empower every person and every organization on the planet to achieve more&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>The company matters now because of the size of its cloud and artificial intelligence business. Photo: Atomic Taco, CC BY-SA 2.0, via Wikimedia Commons<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h3>Overview and Founding<\/h3>\n<p>Microsoft was founded in 1975 by <a href=\"https:\/\/thesauditimes.net\/en\/bill-gates-net-worth-biography-age-companies-and-career-journey\/\">Bill Gates<\/a> and Paul Allen. The young company was based in Albuquerque, New Mexico, before moving to Washington state, according to Microsoft&#8217;s own history of its first 50 years.<\/p>\n<p>It grew on software for personal computers, first with operating systems and then with Office, which reached the market in 1989. Microsoft went public on March 13, 1986, and has since widened into cloud services, devices, gaming, business software and AI.<\/p>\n<p>Windows 3.0 followed in the spring of 1990, and Windows XP went on sale on October 25, 2001. In October 2012 the company released Surface, the first PC it designed in-house.<\/p>\n<p>Under Ballmer, Microsoft also made two large purchases. It agreed in May 2011 to buy Skype for $8.5 billion in cash, and in September 2013 to buy the devices and services business of Nokia and license its patents for 5.44 billion euros.<\/p>\n<h3>Key Milestones<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><b>1975:<\/b> Bill Gates and Paul Allen found Microsoft.<\/li>\n<li><b>1986:<\/b> Microsoft lists its shares on March 13.<\/li>\n<li><b>1995:<\/b> Windows 95 is announced on August 24.<\/li>\n<li><b>2000:<\/b> <a href=\"https:\/\/thesauditimes.net\/en\/steve-ballmer\/\">Steve Ballmer<\/a> becomes chief executive on January 13.<\/li>\n<li><b>2001:<\/b> The first Xbox goes on sale on November 15.<\/li>\n<li><b>2008:<\/b> Windows Azure, the company&#8217;s first cloud computing offering, is announced on October 27.<\/li>\n<li><b>2014:<\/b> Satya Nadella succeeds Ballmer as chief executive in February.<\/li>\n<li><b>2016:<\/b> Microsoft agrees on June 13 to buy LinkedIn for $26.2 billion.<\/li>\n<li><b>2023:<\/b> Microsoft announces Copilot on September 21.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>What It Does<\/h3>\n<p>Microsoft reports its business in three segments. Productivity and Business Processes covers Microsoft 365 for companies and consumers, LinkedIn and the Dynamics business software. Intelligent Cloud includes Azure, GitHub, server products and enterprise services.<\/p>\n<p>The third segment, More Personal Computing, takes in Windows and devices such as Surface, Xbox hardware, games and services, and search advertising through Bing, Copilot, Microsoft News and the Edge browser.<\/p>\n<p>Large companies run their own AI projects on Azure. One example is the accounting firm EY, which <a href=\"https:\/\/thesauditimes.net\/en\/ey-deploys-agentic-ai-across-130000-auditors-in-over-150-countries-via-microsoft-azure\/\">deployed agentic AI across 130,000 auditors<\/a> using the platform.<\/p>\n<p>The company has put AI at the centre of its recent product launches. It announced an AI-powered Bing search engine and Edge browser on February 7, 2023, and unveiled Copilot, its AI assistant, in September of the same year. Windows 11 became available on October 5, 2021.<\/p>\n<p>In its fiscal 2026 results statement, Nadella said the company was &#8220;advancing the frontier on the cost-to-outcome curve&#8221; so that customers can turn AI tokens into business results.<\/p>\n<p>In the Kingdom, Microsoft announced on August 31, 2026 that its Saudi Arabia East datacenter region, located in the Eastern Province, will be available to customers in November 2026. The region has three Azure availability zones, each with separate power, cooling and networking.<\/p>\n<h3>In Numbers<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Revenue: $331.8 billion, up 18% (fiscal 2026)<\/li>\n<li>Operating income: $155.2 billion, up 21% (fiscal 2026)<\/li>\n<li>Net income: $133.7 billion (fiscal 2026)<\/li>\n<li>Full-time employees: about 223,000, of which about 121,000 in the United States (June 30, 2026)<\/li>\n<li>LinkedIn purchase price: $26.2 billion (2016)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Leadership<\/h3>\n<p>Microsoft is led by Satya Nadella, chairman and chief executive officer.
