Axel Dumas is the Executive Chairman of Herm\u00e8s International, the Paris-based maker of leather goods, silk, ready-to-wear and other objects. He has run the group since June 2013, a role equal to chief executive, and he is in charge of its strategy and day-to-day operations.<\/p>\n

Under his leadership Herm\u00e8s<\/a> passed 16 billion euros in yearly revenue for the first time in 2025. He belongs to the sixth generation of the family that founded the house in 1837.<\/p>\n

Education<\/h3>\n

Dumas is a graduate of the Institut d’Etudes Politiques de Paris, known as Sciences Po. He also completed the Advanced Management Program at Harvard Business School.<\/p>\n

He holds a bachelor’s degree in philosophy and a master’s degree in business law, according to the Herm\u00e8s 2025 Universal Registration Document.<\/p>\n

Career<\/h3>\n

Dumas began his working life in banking rather than in the family business. He worked for BNP Paribas in China from 1995 to 1997 and then in the United States from 1999 to 2003.<\/p>\n

His board biography at the investment company Exor puts his time at Paribas at eight years, with postings in Beijing and New York.<\/p>\n

He joined Herm\u00e8s in 2003 as an auditor in the finance department of Herm\u00e8s International. He then moved into retail and became director of sales for France.<\/p>\n

In 2006 he took charge of the jewellery division, which he led until 2008. That year he was appointed head of the leather goods and saddlery division, now the largest business of the house with 44% of 2025 revenue, and he ran it until 2011.<\/p>\n

On 2 May 2011 he became Managing Director of Operations and joined the Executive Committee. Exor describes this post as chief operating officer, a role he held for two years.<\/p>\n

On 4 June 2013 the active partner of Herm\u00e8s appointed him Executive Chairman, with effect from 5 June 2013. His term of office has no fixed end date.<\/p>\n

He followed Patrick Thomas, who had become Executive Chairman in 2006. The group credits Thomas with reorganising its presence into geographical regions and with managing the hand-over to the sixth generation.<\/p>\n

Herm\u00e8s shares its executive management between two executive chairmen. Dumas handles strategy and operations, while Emile Herm\u00e8s SAS, the active partner company, is responsible for vision and strategic priorities, the group says.<\/p>\n
