General Motors Company is a Detroit-based maker of trucks, crossovers and cars sold under the Chevrolet, GMC, Cadillac and Buick brands. It also offers software-enabled services such as OnStar and Super Cruise, and lends to car buyers through GM Financial.<\/p>\n

GM matters now because it is the top seller of vehicles in the United States and is reshaping its plans for electric cars. In 2025 it reported revenue of $185.0 billion and its highest full-year share of the U.S. market in a decade.<\/p>\n

Overview and Founding<\/h3>\n

General Motors was founded by William C. Durant, a former carriage maker from Flint, Michigan. On September 16, 1908, the company was incorporated in Flint, with Buick as its first holding, before it later moved to Detroit.<\/p>\n

Durant bought more than 20 companies in GM’s first 16 months, including Cadillac and Oakland, the brand later known as Pontiac. He launched Chevrolet separately in 1911 with the racing driver Louis Chevrolet, and GM bought Chevrolet on May 2, 1918.<\/p>\n

The present company, General Motors Company, was incorporated in Delaware in 2009. Its head office is at 1240 Woodward Avenue in Detroit.<\/p>\n
