Apple is preparing to enter the foldable smartphone market for the first time, with growing expectations that the company could unveil its long-rumored foldable iPhone during its September 9, 2026 event.

The device, which could be marketed as the iPhone Fold or iPhone Ultra, is expected to appear alongside the iPhone 18 Pro lineup. Its arrival would mark a major shift for Apple after years of watching competitors establish themselves in the rapidly expanding foldable-phone market.

Apple has confirmed its September 9 event under the “Surprise and shine” tagline, fueling speculation that the foldable iPhone could become one of the event’s headline announcements.

Although the phone may be unveiled in September, reports suggest that its commercial launch could come later, potentially in December, with the United States possibly becoming one of its first markets before a wider international rollout.

Pricing is expected to place the device firmly in the premium segment. Current estimates suggest a starting price between $2,000 and $2,500, while higher-end configurations could approach $3,000.

Recent estimates have also suggested that Apple has raised its production target for the device to approximately 10 million units, signaling expectations for substantial demand despite the premium price.

The expected iPhone Fold is rumored to feature a horizontal folding design similar in concept to Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold series, while adopting Apple’s own approach to dimensions and software integration.

The external display could measure approximately 5.5 inches, while the internal OLED screen may reach around 7.8 inches when the device is unfolded.

The larger internal display is expected to support a refresh rate of up to 120Hz, potentially offering smoother scrolling, gaming and multitasking.

When opened, the device could provide an experience closer to that of a compact tablet, giving users significantly more screen space while maintaining the portability of a smartphone when folded.

One of the biggest challenges facing foldable smartphones is the visible crease created where the display bends.

Apple is reportedly working on advanced glass and hinge technologies designed to minimize this effect. Recent leaks have even suggested that the company could achieve a design with a crease that is barely noticeable.

The device could measure between 4.5 and 4.8 millimeters when unfolded, increasing to approximately 9 to 9.5 millimeters when folded.

Its frame is also expected to combine titanium and aluminum, potentially helping Apple balance durability, structural strength and weight.

Performance is expected to be another major component of Apple’s first foldable iPhone.

The device could use Apple’s next-generation A20 or A20 Pro chip, reportedly manufactured using a 2-nanometer process, alongside 12GB of RAM.

Storage options could begin at 256GB and reach as much as 1TB, giving Apple room to position the foldable as a high-end flagship rather than an experimental device.

The phone is expected to run iOS 27, with software enhancements designed specifically around the larger internal display.

These could include improved multitasking capabilities and the ability to run two applications side by side, making the larger screen more useful for productivity as well as entertainment.

Apple could also replace Face ID with Touch ID, potentially helping the company save internal space that could be allocated to the foldable mechanism and other components.

The device may also use Apple’s C2 modem, while some reports suggest it could rely exclusively on eSIM technology to further optimize the internal design.

The foldable iPhone is expected to feature a dual rear-camera system consisting of two 48-megapixel sensors, with one serving as the primary camera and the other offering an ultra-wide field of view.

However, some reports indicate that Apple could leave out a dedicated optical-zoom camera, potentially creating a noticeable difference between the foldable model and the company’s Pro-branded smartphones.

There have also been reports that the device could lack LiDAR and optical image stabilization, although these details remain unconfirmed.

If those compromises materialize, they could become a significant talking point given the phone’s expected price, particularly among users who prioritize smartphone photography.

Battery capacity is another important consideration for a foldable smartphone, particularly one featuring a large internal display while maintaining a slim profile.

Earlier leaks have suggested a battery capacity between 5,000 and 5,500mAh, while a more recent report pointed to a dual-cell battery with a combined capacity of approximately 4,883mAh.

The actual battery configuration and expected endurance remain unclear until Apple provides official specifications.

Support for MagSafe is also yet to be confirmed, although recent leaks have suggested that the technology could potentially be included.

Apple’s entry into the foldable smartphone market could significantly accelerate adoption of the technology.

The company’s strength lies not only in hardware, but also in its ability to integrate devices, operating systems and services into a tightly connected ecosystem. A foldable iPhone could therefore appeal to existing iPhone users who have been waiting for Apple to enter the category rather than switching to competing platforms.

However, the device will need to deliver more than a recognizable Apple logo to justify its expected price.

Apple will likely face intense scrutiny over durability, hinge reliability, screen quality, battery life and the practical benefits of its foldable form factor. The company will also need to demonstrate that iOS can take full advantage of the larger display rather than simply scaling existing smartphone applications.

The rumored camera compromises could present another challenge, particularly if the foldable iPhone costs significantly more than the company’s conventional flagship models.

With Apple’s September 9 event approaching, attention is now focused on whether the company will confirm the long-running iPhone Fold rumors and introduce its first foldable smartphone, or whether the highly anticipated event has an entirely different surprise in store.
