The work was presented at the 2026 IEEE Symposium on Security and Privacy, one of the world’s leading conferences in cybersecurity and privacy research.

Motion sensors may reveal more than movement

Virtual reality headsets rely on motion sensors, including accelerometers, to track head movement and posture and enable real-time interaction with virtual environments.

The study found that these sensors can also capture extremely subtle vibrations associated with pupil responses to visual stimuli. Because such responses are correlated with what users perceive visually, the researchers investigated whether motion-sensor data could be used to reconstruct representations associated with electroencephalography, or EEG, signals and infer information that was previously considered inaccessible through motion sensors alone.

This expands the scope of known VR privacy risks, which have traditionally focused on directly observable information such as applications used, websites visited and physical movements within virtual environments.

BRAVESPY exposes a new privacy attack surface

The research team developed a system called BRAVESPY to systematically investigate the threat. It was evaluated on four commercial VR headsets, including the Meta Oculus Quest 2, Meta Oculus Quest, PICO 4 and HTC Vive Pro, with 25 participants taking part in the experiments.

The findings revealed three major levels of potential privacy exposure.

At the user-interface level, BRAVESPY was able to infer websites, applications and streaming videos viewed by users, achieving accuracy above 85% in several activity-related inference tasks.

At the user level, the system demonstrated the ability to infer information such as user identity, gaze movement and aspects of virtual keyboard interaction. In some tasks, accuracy exceeded 96% for user re-identification, gaze tracking and virtual keystroke inference.

The most significant finding involved what the researchers describe as “unobservable” privacy. BRAVESPY was able to infer images perceived by users inside the virtual environment, achieving overall accuracy ranging from 52% to 67.2% in the reported experiments.

How can eye responses become data?

The core idea behind the research is the relationship between visual stimuli, pupil responses and subtle vibrations that can reach a VR headset mounted on the user’s head.

According to the study, motion sensors can capture these minute signals. Signal-processing techniques and AI models can then analyze them to reconstruct representations associated with brain activity and infer information related to the visual stimuli perceived by the user.

This does not mean that VR headsets can directly “read thoughts.” Instead, the research demonstrates the feasibility of extracting certain perception-related information from side-channel signals collected by sensors that were not originally designed for that purpose.

A threat beyond gaming

The findings become increasingly important as immersive technologies expand beyond gaming and entertainment into education, healthcare, remote work and collaboration.

The researchers warn that unrestricted access to motion-sensor data by applications or web pages could create a new channel for privacy leakage, particularly if malicious actors are able to continuously collect and analyze the information using AI.

The concern is not limited to data that appears sensitive on its face. Even seemingly ordinary motion data may contain patterns that can be processed to reveal additional information about a user.

Researchers propose measures to reduce the risk

The researchers emphasized that the purpose of their work is to identify the privacy vulnerability early rather than encourage malicious exploitation.

The study proposes stronger sensor-access controls, including permission-based mechanisms that require explicit user authorization before applications or web pages can access motion sensors.

Other potential defenses include limiting the amount of sensor data available to applications and introducing signal-obfuscation mechanisms that make privacy-sensitive patterns harder to extract. The experiments indicated that certain obfuscation and data-management techniques can substantially reduce inference accuracy.

From privacy threat to brain-computer interface opportunity

Despite its security implications, the research could also open a new avenue for brain-computer interface (BCI) research, which seeks to translate brain-related signals into information that computers can interpret.

The potential advantage is that commercially available VR devices could eventually complement or reduce reliance on specialized equipment for capturing certain perception-related signals, potentially expanding research and applications in healthcare, education and human-computer interaction.

A new challenge for immersive technology security

The BRAVESPY findings add a new dimension to the global discussion surrounding privacy in VR and extended reality, showing that sensor data collected primarily for movement and interaction may contain far more sensitive information than previously assumed.

As VR and metaverse technologies continue to evolve, the research highlights the need for privacy frameworks that address not only conventional personal data but also indirect sensor signals that, when combined with AI, could reveal aspects of users’ behavior and visual perception.

Researchers including a scientist from King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST) have uncovered a new potential privacy leakage channel in commercial virtual reality headsets, showing that built-in motion sensors can capture subtle signals associated with users’ visual responses and that artificial intelligence can analyze those signals to infer information far beyond basic movements inside a virtual environment.
