FIFA President Gianni Infantino arrived in Cali, Colombia, to attend the inauguration ceremony of the country’s newly elected president, Abelardo De La Espriella, as the world football governing body continues to face mounting internal challenges ahead of its next presidential election.

Infantino traveled alongside CONMEBOL President Alejandro Domínguez, with both officials welcomed by representatives of the Colombian Football Federation upon their arrival.

The trip takes place while FIFA remains under pressure following a controversial proposal that would have opened parts of the organization to private investment.

Although the initiative was ultimately withdrawn after widespread criticism, the debate has intensified scrutiny of FIFA’s governance and leadership.

With less than eight months remaining before the current presidential term concludes, attention is increasingly turning toward the FIFA presidential election scheduled for March 2027 in Rabat, Morocco.

UEFA has continued to question FIFA’s leadership despite the withdrawal of the investment proposal, highlighting growing tensions within world football ahead of the election.

These developments place Infantino under increasing political and institutional pressure as he seeks to maintain support across FIFA’s member associations.

Following the inauguration ceremony, Infantino is scheduled to visit a sports complex to participate in a youth football festival organized as part of FIFA’s grassroots development initiatives aimed at promoting the game among children.

President Abelardo De La Espriella, elected in June, is regarded as one of Colombia’s leading conservative political figures and has been described as politically aligned with U.S. President Donald Trump, who has maintained a cordial relationship with Infantino through various international sporting events.
