They remember phone numbers, appointments and tasks, store thousands of photos, provide instant access to information and guide people virtually anywhere.

But as people increasingly outsource these everyday mental tasks to their devices, researchers are examining an intriguing question: Could our reliance on smartphones be changing the way we use our memory?

The phenomenon is sometimes described as “digital amnesia” — a term referring to the tendency to rely on digital devices as external stores of information rather than remembering everything ourselves.

Importantly, this does not mean scientists have established that smartphones permanently damage memory.

Your Smartphone Has Become an External Memory

Before smartphones became ubiquitous, remembering phone numbers, appointments, directions and other everyday information was routine.

Today, much of that information can be retrieved within seconds.

Rather than indicating that the brain has simply become worse at remembering, researchers have examined this behavior through the concept of cognitive offloading — using external tools to reduce the mental effort required to perform certain tasks.

In effect, the smartphone can function as an extension of our memory.

The “Google Effect”

One of the best-known studies examining this behavior was published in Science in 2011 and became associated with what is often called the Google Effect.

Researchers found that when people expected information to remain available later, they were less likely to remember the information itself.

However, they were better at remembering where the information could be found.

The findings suggested that readily available digital information may not simply cause people to “stop remembering.” Instead, the brain may change what it prioritizes — remembering how to retrieve information rather than retaining every detail internally.

Are Smartphones Actually Damaging Memory?

Current scientific evidence does not establish that ordinary smartphone use directly causes permanent memory deterioration.

The concern is more nuanced.

Some researchers argue that consistently outsourcing certain mental tasks could mean that particular cognitive skills receive less regular practice.

If your smartphone remembers every appointment, your contacts store every phone number, search engines retrieve facts instantly and GPS handles every journey, you have fewer reasons to perform some of those tasks from memory.

As with many skills, reduced use can mean reduced practice.

GPS Is Changing How We Navigate

Navigation provides one of the clearest examples.

Without digital navigation, reaching an unfamiliar destination often requires paying attention to landmarks, street layouts and directions while constructing a mental representation of the area.

GPS applications can remove much of that requirement by providing turn-by-turn instructions.

Research has linked heavier reliance on GPS with poorer performance on certain spatial-navigation tasks when people later have to rely on their own memory.

That does not establish that GPS damages the brain. Instead, researchers have considered whether frequent reliance on navigation technology simply provides fewer opportunities to exercise natural spatial-navigation skills.

What London Taxi Drivers Taught Scientists About the Brain

Research involving London taxi drivers offers a striking example of how experience and training can relate to the brain.

Traditionally, drivers had to develop extensive knowledge of London’s complicated street network.

Research led by neuroscientist Eleanor Maguire found associations between intensive navigation experience and differences involving the hippocampus, a brain region crucial to memory and spatial navigation.

The research contributed to a broader understanding of neuroplasticity: the brain can adapt in response to the skills and tasks people repeatedly practice.

This raises an interesting question in the smartphone era — what happens when technology means certain skills are practiced much less frequently?

Notifications May Be Another Part of the Problem

Memory storage is not the only concern surrounding smartphones.

Constant notifications, rapid switching between apps and repeated interruptions can fragment attention.

That matters because attention is essential to memory formation. The brain must adequately process information before it can encode it into a memory that can later be retrieved.

Sometimes, therefore, what feels like forgetting may actually begin earlier: the information may never have received enough attention to form a strong memory in the first place.

Should People Stop Using Their Smartphones?

The research does not suggest abandoning smartphones, search engines or GPS.

These technologies provide enormous practical benefits and can free mental resources for other tasks.

A more useful question is how to benefit from digital tools without completely outsourcing everyday cognitive activity.

Trying to recall information before searching for it, remembering important phone numbers, occasionally navigating using landmarks and reducing unnecessary notifications during periods requiring concentration can all provide opportunities to actively exercise memory and attention.

Ultimately, the emerging scientific question is more complex than whether smartphones are simply “good” or “bad” for memory.

It is about how constant access to technology is reshaping what humans choose to remember — and what we increasingly allow our devices to remember for us.

Smartphones have become deeply embedded in everyday life.
