\nHealth authorities in the United States are investigating one of the country’s largest Cyclospora outbreaks in recent years after hundreds of infections were reported across multiple states, while the exact source of the contamination remains unknown.<\/p>\n

Cyclospora is a microscopic intestinal parasite that is commonly transmitted through contaminated food or water and can cause prolonged gastrointestinal illness if left untreated.<\/p>\n

Hundreds of Cases Reported<\/h3>\n

According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), at least 843 confirmed cases have been reported across 31 states, with 86 patients requiring hospitalization.<\/p>\n

Officials believe the actual number of infections could be higher as additional reports continue to be investigated.<\/p>\n

Michigan has experienced one of the sharpest increases, reporting more than 1,500 cases this year compared with its typical annual average of around 50 cases. New York has also reported approximately 500 infections, including more than 370 cases in New York City.<\/p>\n

What Is Cyclospora?<\/h3>\n

Cyclospora is a microscopic parasite that infects the small intestine and causes an illness known as cyclosporiasis.<\/p>\n

People usually become infected by consuming food or water contaminated with human feces containing the parasite. Unlike many other intestinal infections, Cyclospora is not typically spread directly from person to person because the parasite requires one to two weeks outside the body before it becomes infectious.<\/p>\n

Although infections usually peak during spring and summer, the scale of this year’s outbreak has prompted extensive public health investigations.<\/p>\n

Symptoms Can Last for Weeks<\/h3>\n

Symptoms typically appear between two days and two weeks after exposure.<\/p>\n

The most common symptom is persistent watery diarrhea, but patients may also experience:<\/p>\n

    \n
  • Abdominal cramps<\/li>\n
  • Nausea<\/li>\n
  • Bloating<\/li>\n
  • Loss of appetite<\/li>\n
  • Fatigue<\/li>\n
  • Weight loss in some cases<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    While most people recover with proper treatment, prolonged diarrhea can cause dehydration, particularly in young children, older adults, pregnant women, and individuals with weakened immune systems.<\/p>\n

    Why Is the Source Difficult to Find?<\/h3>\n

    Public health experts say Cyclospora outbreaks are particularly challenging to investigate because symptoms often appear weeks after contaminated food has been consumed.<\/p>\n

    In many cases, the source may be a small ingredient used in multiple meals, such as cilantro, basil, or leafy greens, making it difficult for investigators to identify the exact origin of the contamination.<\/p>\n

    How to Reduce the Risk<\/h3>\n

    Health experts recommend several preventive measures:<\/p>\n

      \n
    • Wash hands thoroughly with soap and water before handling food and after using the restroom.<\/li>\n
    • Wash fruits and vegetables carefully under running water.<\/li>\n
    • Remove and discard the outer leaves of lettuce before washing.<\/li>\n
    • Rinse fresh herbs such as cilantro and basil individually.<\/li>\n
    • Cook food whenever possible, as high temperatures can destroy the parasite.<\/li>\n
    • Drink safe, clean water, particularly in areas experiencing outbreaks.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
