A<\/span>s<\/span> I sat down with Abdulrahman Al Khathlan, founder and chairman of AHK Group, I felt a surge of excitement and curiosity. The Saudi Times is pleased to feature him this month and share his story. A first mover, trendsetter and recognized pioneer, Al Khathlan has taken lessons learned in the US and Europe and built an operational platform designed to scale with the Kingdom\u2019s giga-project ambitions. His goal is simple and ambitious: to inspire the next Saudi generation and make the Kingdom a global hub for tourism, hospitality and gastronomy.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

A changing industry, and an early lesson in timing<\/b><\/p>

\u201cWhen I started in <\/span>1998,<\/span> the industry in Saudi Arabia was still developing and guest expectations were only beginning to form,\u201d Abdulrahman told The Saudi Times. After spending time in the United States and across Europe, it reshaped his view of hospitality, not merely as food service but as a force that can shape lifestyle, culture and guest behavior. An early attempt to launch a healthy-dining concept back home proved instructive: \u201cThe idea was right, but the market was too early, fast food was booming,\u201d he shared with The Saudi Times. That experience cemented a core principle: vision must be paired with market readiness.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

From fine dining to platform thinking<\/b><\/p>

AHK\u2019s trajectory moved quickly from landmark openings to systemic work. <\/span>In 2003 <\/span>Al Khathlan opened <\/span>Spazio<\/b> at Kingdom Tower inside the Four Seasons, one of Saudi Arabia\u2019s first true fine-dining restaurants, developed with international consultants to raise culinary and operational benchmarks. Strategic franchising followed: securing Ladur\u00e9e in 2014, then Fauchon, making AHK the sole operator to hold both competing patisserie names.<\/span><\/p>

At this point, Abdulrahman Al Khathlan didn\u2019t stop at restaurants. As Saudi Arabia embarked on large-scale projects with <\/span>Vision 2030<\/b>, AHK evolved into a hospitality platform able to design and run integrated ecosystems: destination hospitality, workforce catering, VVIP services, mobile kitchens and experiential activations. <\/span><\/p>

\u201cHospitality isn\u2019t just restaurants. It\u2019s culture, destinations, movement, experience, and emotion,\u201d he told The Saudi Times, a mantra that now guides AHK\u2019s approach to <\/span>giga projects.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

Operational rigor under pressure<\/b><\/p>

The Saudi Times asked the question about scaling and he said that scaling to massive events and complex destinations exposed operational gaps and forced AHK to build repeatable systems. The group ran <\/span>22 restaurants <\/span>for <\/span>MDLBEAST<\/b>, serving as many as <\/span>25,000 customers <\/span>per day across a four-day festival, and delivered crew meals and VVIP services for NEOM in 2021\u201322 with mobile kitchens operating beyond Riyadh. <\/span>Al Qiddiyah Resort\u2019s <\/span>restaurant and airport-experience work for King Salman Airport are further proof points.<\/span><\/p>

\u201cQuality isn\u2019t only luxury, quality is operational consistency,\u201d Al Khathlan told\u00a0<\/span><\/i>\u00a0<\/span><\/i>The Saudi Times.<\/i><\/b>\u00a0<\/b><\/p><\/blockquote>

For this hospitality leader, the lesson is clear: preparation, leadership, training, logistics and real-time problem-solving turn ambition into reliably repeatable results. Whether serving 20 VVIPs or tens of thousands, the same systems must hold.<\/span><\/p>

Local identity, global standards<\/b><\/p>

Al Khathlan is explicit about the next phase: local Saudi concepts that meet international benchmarks. At VIA Riyadh, AHK is launching three new concepts designed for identity, durability and accessible pricing.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

\u201cLuxury doesn\u2019t have to be ridiculously expensive,\u201d Abdulrahman said, arguing that atmosphere, value and consistency matter as much as prestige.<\/span><\/i><\/p>

Translating Saudi identity into scalable guest experiences has been central to AHK\u2019s international showcases, from <\/span>Davos to ZAAD London <\/span>during Riyadh Season, where Saudi flavors and hospitality were presented at a fine-dining level without losing authenticity.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

\u201cPeople remember how a country made them feel,\u201d Abdulrahman said. That emotional memory, he says, is the Kingdom\u2019s strongest soft power.<\/span><\/i><\/p><\/blockquote>

A platform for talent and a school for the future<\/b><\/p>

For leaders and investors, Abdulrahman highlights a strategic gap: talent development. With <\/span>Vision 2030 <\/span>targeting tens of millions of visitors, Saudi hospitality needs an ecosystem of trained professionals. AHK is studying a Saudi hospitality academy in partnership with an international culinary institution to build that pipeline.
