The index evaluated over two million AI-related scientific papers and invention patents worldwide and places the Kingdom ahead of several long-established research nations.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n
The Kingdom produced 29,639 AI-related publications during the measured period \u2014 translating to more than 823 publications per million people. Among the countries that Saudi Arabia has surpassed in this ranking are the Netherlands, Singapore, Russia, Switzerland, and Sweden, all of which are regarded as mature science and technology economies.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n
The result is not accidental. The Kingdom has invested systematically in research infrastructure through institutions such as King Abdullah University of Science and Technology, King Abdulaziz University, and King Saud University \u2014 all of which have built substantial programmes in artificial intelligence, data science, and machine learning. These institutions have also deepened their international academic partnerships over the past decade, allowing Saudi researchers to contribute to globally recognised journals and conferences.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Globally, Mainland China leads the rankings in research volume, recording a 696 percent increase over the past decade to reach 769,000 AI publications. Japan and South Korea have broken into the global top ten, underscoring East Asia’s growing dominance in the international AI research landscape. The United States remains a leading force in terms of research impact and patent commercialisation.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n
Saudi Arabia’s climb to 15th is particularly notable when considered against where the Kingdom stood a decade ago, when it registered no significant presence in global AI research rankings. The ascent reflects the targeted deployment of government resources toward education reform, research grants, and talent attraction \u2014 a strategy that is now yielding measurable returns.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n
On the innovation side, Saudi Arabia ranked 24th globally with 1,189 AI-related patents filed. The absolute count remains modest compared to the top patent-producing nations, but the ranking signals early-stage commercialisation efforts gaining real traction alongside the country’s academic research output.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n
The AI research milestone fits within a broader narrative of economic transformation. Saudi Arabia also advanced 17 positions in the 2024 Global AI Index by Tortoise Media, ranking 14th overall and overtaking the UAE as the leading Arab nation in AI. In that assessment, the Kingdom received the highest global score in the government strategy category \u2014 recognition of how deliberately Saudi Arabia has structured its approach to building technological leadership.
