Authorities in Saudi Arabia have officially announced that Friday will mark the first day of Eid Al-Fitr for the year 1447 AH, following the non-sighting of the Shawwal crescent moon on the designated observation evening. The announcement brings to a close the holy month of Ramadan with confirmation that fasting will continue through Thursday, completing a full 30 days in accordance with Islamic tradition.

Moon sighting remains one of the most carefully observed traditions in Saudi Arabia, where the process carries both religious significance and national importance. Specialised committees operate across multiple regions of the Kingdom each evening during the final days of Ramadan, deploying optical instruments and trained observers to monitor the western horizon for the appearance of the Shawwal crescent shortly after sunset.

This year, after a thorough review of both observational reports from committees across the Kingdom and complementary astronomical data, authorities confirmed that the crescent moon was not visible under the prevailing atmospheric conditions. The Supreme Court formally declared Friday as the first day of Shawwal and the beginning of Eid Al-Fitr celebrations, aligning the Kingdom with Islamic jurisprudence that prioritises actual moon sighting over purely calculated dates.

The announcement was broadcast across all major Saudi media outlets shortly after the evening’s observation window closed, allowing families, communities, and institutions across the Kingdom to finalise their preparations for the holiday.

With the date now officially confirmed, cities across the Kingdom have embraced a vibrant and festive atmosphere as preparations reach their final and most intensive stage. Mosques and designated open-air prayer grounds are being readied to accommodate the large numbers of worshippers who will gather for Eid prayers in the hours immediately following sunrise on Friday morning. Authorities have made logistical arrangements to manage crowd flows at major prayer sites in Riyadh, Mecca, Medina, Jeddah, and other cities, ensuring that the Eid prayer experience is safe, orderly, and spiritually meaningful for all attendees.

Shopping centres, markets, and commercial districts across the Kingdom witnessed an extraordinary surge in activity in the final days before the announcement, as residents made last-minute purchases of gifts, new clothing, and festive foods. Retailers reported strong sales across clothing, confectionery, perfumes, and home goods, categories that see consistently elevated demand during the Eid season. Food preparation within households has been a central activity, with families preparing traditional dishes and sweets to be shared with relatives and neighbours over the holiday days.

Eid Al-Fitr stands as one of the most significant and joyful religious occasions in the Islamic calendar, representing the culmination of Ramadan’s spiritual journey of fasting, prayer, and reflection. The holiday is understood as a divine gift, a time of collective gratitude, of renewed social bonds, and of generosity expressed through the giving of Zakat Al-Fitr and personal gifts to family and friends.

Across Saudi Arabia, the Eid experience has evolved in recent years to encompass a wide range of cultural and entertainment events that complement the traditional religious observances. Festivals, live performances, outdoor exhibitions, and family entertainment programmes are scheduled across the country’s major cities and regions, reflecting Vision 2030’s commitment to creating a vibrant, year-round cultural and entertainment scene that enriches the lives of citizens and residents.

The combination of deep-rooted Islamic tradition and a modern, dynamic cultural programming approach makes Eid Al-Fitr in Saudi Arabia a uniquely rich celebration, one that honours the spiritual foundations of the occasion while embracing the full range of communal joy and shared experience that the holiday represents. Families across the Kingdom are expected to enjoy several days of gatherings, outdoor activities, and festivities as the holiday brings communities together in a spirit of warmth and renewal.
