Speaking at the World Environment Social and Governance Summit in Riyadh, Ahmed Al-Anzi, General Manager of the National Greening Program (NGP),<\/p>\n
emphasized that this long-term initiative is more than just a tree-planting effort\u2014it\u2019s a battle for cleaner air, healthier soil, and a more sustainable environment.<\/p>\n

A Roadmap to 2100: Long-Term Vision for Saudi Arabia\u2019s Landscapes<\/strong><\/h3>\n
Under the National Center for Vegetation Cover, the program is designed to combat land degradation, restore biodiversity, and improve air quality. Al-Anzi explained that environmental restoration is a gradual process, requiring a vision that extends beyond short-term milestones.<\/p>\n
\u201cTrees grow slowly, ecosystems rebuild incrementally. Our vision extends to 2100 to ensure real impact,\u201d Al-Anzi stated.<\/p>\n
This phased strategy aligns with Vision 2030\u2019s sustainability goals, allowing for adaptive responses to climate shifts and changing environmental conditions.<\/p>\n

Respiratory diseases linked to air pollution and airborne sand particles are a leading health concern in the Kingdom. To counteract this, the NGP is focusing on restoring damaged green corridors and implementing policies to curb overgrazing and urban sprawl.<\/p>\n
Using satellite-based NDVI mapping, experts are able to monitor vegetation decline and recovery, ensuring that afforestation efforts are effectively targeted.<\/p>\n
10 Million Trees Annually and AI-Driven Water Optimization \nOne of the core goals of the initiative is to plant 10 million native trees annually by 2030, prioritizing species that are resistant to drought and suited to Saudi Arabia\u2019s arid climate.<\/p>\n
To maximize efficiency, the program is deploying AI technology to optimize water usage, incorporating renewable water sources such as treated wastewater.<\/p>\n
Additionally, the initiative aims to train 20,000 citizens in land stewardship and sustainable ecosystem management, fostering community-driven environmental efforts.<\/p>\n
Major Achievements So Far<\/strong><\/h3>\n
Saudi Arabia\u2019s commitment to afforestation has already yielded remarkable progress: \n128 million trees planted so far, including vital mangrove forests. \n288,000 hectares of land rehabilitated, prioritizing soil conservation and reforestation. \n4.4 million hectares of land protected, with new national parks and conservation areas established.<\/p>\n
