Reseda Alba A Key Player in Saudi Arabia’s Fight Against Desertification

Reseda alba, commonly known as white mignonette, is an aromatic flowering herb that naturally thrives in several regions across northern Saudi Arabia, particularly in the Northern Borders Region. This resilient plant plays a vital role in fighting desertification and promoting ecological balance.

Flourishing in both sandy and clay soils, Reseda alba is well-adapted to the Kingdom’s desert climate.

In spring, it blooms with fragrant white flowers that attract bees and other pollinators, helping to enhance biodiversity and support a healthy ecosystem.

Beyond its ecological function, the plant is also cultivated for ornamental purposes and can reach up to one meter in height. It is native to Europe, Asia, and North Africa, and has been introduced to other parts of the world.

Nasser Al-Mujlad, chairman of the Aman Environmental Association, emphasized the importance of the growing presence of Reseda alba as a symbol of the region’s natural botanical heritage.

He highlighted its aesthetic value and its contribution to ecotourism and environmental significance in northern Saudi Arabia.

Al-Mujlad also noted that many plant species once considered endangered are now making a comeback, thanks to the creation of protected reserves and the implementation of new environmental regulations, ensuring the preservation of Saudi Arabia’s rich natural resources.
