Founding Day is a national occasion that commemorates the establishment of the Saudi state by Imam Muhammad bin Saud more than three centuries ago.

The state was founded as a political entity to achieve unity and stability, leading to the prosperity of the Kingdom, which took Diriyah as its capital and witnessed the flourishing of culture and knowledge.

His Majesty King Salman bin Abdulaziz issued a royal decree declaring February 22 as Saudi Arabia’s Founding Day to be celebrated annually.

On this occasion, King Salman stated:

“The celebration of Founding Day is a commemoration of our state’s history, the unity of its people, its resilience in the face of challenges, and its aspirations for the future.”

Meanwhile, Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman emphasized:

“We have a deeply rooted history that extends far into the past and intersects with many civilizations. While some believe the history of the Arabian Peninsula is short, in reality, we are an ancient and deeply established nation.”

February 22 was chosen as Founding Day to mark the beginning of Imam Muhammad bin Saud’s reign when he ascended the throne of Diriyah on the second half of 30 Jumada Al-Thani 1139 AH (February 22, 1727 CE).
